Heather + John's Mountain Home
Whole Home Remodel in Jackson, WY
With good bones but dated finishes, this 5,000-square-foot home underwent a gut renovation to meet its new owners' tastes. The goal was a sophisticated home with an earthy, rustic palette and interesting textures.
In all of the rooms, we worked with organic materials in complementary finishes: rough and smooth, hard and soft. Wood, tile, steel, and stone are used abundantly. Rigorous attention to finish is prevalent in each room. The centerpiece of the home is the custom gas fireplace designed by Michael Howells with technical mastery by Walter Moberg of Moberg Fireplaces.
This project was published in Homestead.
Michael has an amazing eye for detail. Throughout the project we felt very comfortable that every aspect of the design would be carefully considered to integrate our personal aesthetic with a beautiful functionality that would stand the test of time.

Good bones
The owners loved the property and many aspects of the original house. But dated finishes and a desire for radiant heat (and other systems upgrades in a harsh climate) led to this extensive renovation.

High-tech hearth
This fireplace was quite a challenge. Teton County has strict rules about open fireplaces, but the owners had their hearts set on a huge fireplace with open seating on three sides. By opting for gas, we were able to meet the design and safety brief. We also worked closely with fireplace expert Walter Moberg. The result is a 6-foot-long, 18-inch-high flame with whisper-quiet extraction via a waxed, blackened steel hood.

Metal + wood
We designed cabinetry and fixed finishes with an eye to melding materials in surprising ways. Floating wood nightstands are wrapped with thin sheets of metal, as is the headboard in the master bedroom. All cabinetry was custom designed by Michael Howells and fabricated by Jaxon Ching and his team at Willow Creek Woodworks.

Warm to the touch
In a house with crisp lines and ample use of steel finishes, we took care to add natural materials in key places, such as this leather-wrapped pull at the front door.
