Dawn + Jeff
Second floor Addition + Garage
This remodel absorbs a cramped 1-story cottage into a wholly transformed, spacious new home. With a second child on the way and desire for more space, Dawn + Jeff considered moving. But they loved their neighborhood. They had also put work into their home, replacing first floor windows and putting considerable effort into landscaping.
Instead of selling or demolishing their old house, the owners upcycled it into something new. The second floor contains a master suite, 2 kids' rooms and a Jack-and-Jill kids' bath. Ground floor updates include a renovated kitchen and a new mud room, as well as a longed-for garage.
Finishes were kept to a tight budget, but bright splashes of color steer clear of generic new construction. At the exterior, the goal was to respect the neighborhood, in terms of scale and materials, but also create something of interest. There's a nod to early Frank Lloyd Wright in the massing and roofline, but the lines and palette aim for a more contemporary attitude.
