Drake Tower

Apartment Renovation

Located in Chicago's iconic Drake Tower, this 2-bedroom pied-à-terre received a comprehensive renovation. The owners' primary residence is in Jackson Hole, but frequent travel to Chicago resulted in this home away from home.

Michael Howells did architecture and interiors for this project. The driving concept was to celebrate the vibrancy of this great art city, and the couple’s classic yet bold tastes. The shifting blues threaded through the various finishes and furnishings are inspired by the stunning views of Lake Michigan.

Appointments are colorful and fresh, but also evoke the Drake Tower’s classic origins, aiming to strike a timeless balance between contemporary and traditional. Lighting is Art Deco-inspired, by the renowned Parisian firm Atelier Jean Perzel. The original and eccentric custom Drake door handles were salvaged and re-integrated. The custom fireplace screen was designed by Michael Howells, with a little help from Piet Mondrian. The small galley kitchen is a model of efficiency, with state-of-the-art Valcucine cabinetry and countertops. Bathrooms are appointed in statuary marble with fixtures by Lefroy & Brooks.
